It's Electric

One of those things about owning your first house is the fear-factor. As in, how afraid should I be of doing this task myself? When it comes to painting trim, repairing a window sill, caulking, or assembling IKEA furniture, I am willing to tackle those tasks with little fear.

Then, there's tasks such as upgrading the wiring in the house, or installing new lights. I probably could do the lights if I followed the directions on the package (not to mention cutting the electricity before starting the job), but choose not to because I have no idea what I'm doing!

So, for our electrical-upgrade job, we hired Portland's West Side Electric. They are IBEW-represented journeyman-level electricians and did a great job. One thing I learned during this job is that the weird first roof on our house (still visible from the attic, with the real roof built over it) is crumbling and the shiny new wiring looks like it's sitting on top of a demo site! (See photo). So, I may be crawling around in this shipwreck-looking attic to clean it up before we have the house sealed and insulated. Fun!

This job also gave us the opportunity to replace the grody/rusty porch light with a new one from my favorite store, Rejuvenation. We love it. I also ordered a new light for the back of the house, which arrived today. Get a load of the sticker on it - "Built for MOLLY CHIDSEY" (!) It has iridescent art glass in the lantern. A splurge that will no doubt provide much ambiance to the back yard next summer.

  2. Mol- the lights look great! (how could they not, coming from R?!) How beautiful and fun. It will be a real treat to go outside this spring and have something there, already installed and ready to greet you on a balmy evening. As for the old and new wiring photos- they look all to familiar to us! Great job! And, yes, to the last commenter, you are one crafty lady (in all the good ways!)
    Keep up the good work!
